Elementary Principal's Report - September 2016
Mr. Stephen Waigand
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Stephen Waigand
- It has been a fantastic first two weeks at RPE! We have a very dedicated and passionate group working with our students. I’m excited for what the year will bring!
- August attendance for the elementary was 98.5%. There are 185 students enrolled in Rock Port Elementary K-6. This is an increase of 19 students from this time last year. We have 21 students enrolled in Mrs. Roup and Mrs. Vogler’s Little Jays’ Full Day Preschool and 10 in Mrs. Gaines’s morning Half-Day Preschool. Mrs. Gaines is assisting as a para in the afternoon and during the preschool activity times.
- MAP Scores are in and have been distributed to classroom teachers. Our elementary students did exceptionally well! The staff really works hard to prepare our students to do their best...hats off to them for a job well done! A breakdown of scores will be presented in the October Board Report.
- Homework Club started for grades 3-6 and takes place on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons. The following teachers have been assigned as Homework Club Instructors: Jennifer Geib (3rd), Jill Gilson (4th), Lisa Weber and Stacy Hughes (5th), and Kari Amthor (6th). Special Education teacher, Mrs. Cox, has a group of her students, and Mrs. Mertens continues after school tutoring for some of her students as well.
- At our August elementary staff meeting teachers we discussed committee sign-ups, procedures for our new lunch schedule, positive phone calls home, Blue Jay of the Week students, and plans for our upcoming Conference 275 Professional Development Day. Our September staff meeting is planned for September 7 with teacher evaluations/observations as the main topic.
- Students displaying the character trait of the month will be recognized as our Blue Jays of the Week...every staff member in the elementary will be nominating a student each month. We will announce these students during our Monday Motivation time each week. This will start on September 6. September’s character trait is Respect.
- Elementary student council elections for grades 3-6 were held on September 2. The kids did a great job with their speeches and I’m looking forward to working with them throughout the year! Students voted on electronic ballots this year.
- Deputy Rick Sons will once again start teaching a curriculum to our primary grades covering a wide variety of topics from general safety, dealing with strangers, good touch/bad touch, drugs, and gun safety. This is a 19-20 week program with each session lasting 15 to 20 minutes each. This will begin on September 13.
- The Backpack Buddies Program is off and running with students receiving their first backpack of food on Friday, September 9.
- Tech Updates: Promethean Boards have been installed in Mrs. Roup’s and Mrs. Lawrence’s classrooms.
- PLTW Parent Info Night was a success. 33 parents and teachers with students ranging from PK to 6th grade were in attendance. Mrs. Walker gave a brief overview of the program and some key dates to remember for the school year. October 10 will be our first “Student Showcase” where student projects will be on display to share with parents and community members.
- Rock Port Elementary will hold a Title 1 Parent meeting on Thursday, September 8th at 5:30 pm in the Title 1 Reading Room. This meeting is for all parents with children that currently receive Title 1 Reading or Math services. We will discuss Title 1 requirements, the Missouri Learning Standards (our current curriculum), Accelerated Reader (grades 1-6), new program added this year (STAR Math), understanding student test reports, and complaint procedures. Refreshments will be served.
- Mid-term is Friday, September 23. Grades will go home that day.
- I’m working my way through the elementary...learning all their names. 6th grade complete with many students in various other grade levels down as well. Next up 5th grade...
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- I attended an Administrator Mentoring Program (AMP) meeting on August 30 in St. Joe.
- We are super excited about the Conference 275 Professional Development Day on September 19. Teachers have the opportunity to drive their own learning by signing up for breakout sessions in the morning. The afternoon will be a chance to network with other teachers in their grade level/activity area from around the conference.
- Mrs. Owen will be attending a Speech Implementer training on September 29.

Elementary Principal’s Report - August 2016
Mr. Stephen Waigand
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Stephen Waigand
- We have officially moved to Rock Port! We were able to close on our house in early July (513 Park East Drive) and working on putting boxes where they need to go! I’ve had the opportunity to work with many of our teachers throughout the summer and have been impressed with their professionalism and commitment to the profession. A special thanks to Tyne Chaney; she has been very instrumental to the start of this school year. Also to Mrs. Evans for spending a few days with me earlier in the summer to ensure a smooth transition. I’ve very excited for the upcoming school year as I continue to learn and grow.
- Welcome Back To School postcards have been sent out to all elementary students.
- Elementary and preschool registration will be held August 8 and 9 from 9-noon and 1-3pm.
- “Meet Your Teacher Night” will be held on Wednesday, August 17 from 5:30 – 6:30pm The Rotary Club will once again sponsor a meal in the cafeteria.
- Staff will be involved with meetings and other back-to-school activities on August 15, 16, and 17.
- The dedication our elementary staff members show is remarkable! They have been spending some long hours the last few weeks preparing their classrooms for the first day of school. Some fresh coats of paint and rearranging of some learning spaces help to make the classroom environment warm and inviting.
- The custodial staff cleaned and shined the building so it’s ready for our first day of school. A special thanks to Crystal Schomburg, Jade Lemmon, and Gage Lemmon for painting the elementary hallways.
- The Backpack Buddies Program will continue to offer a weekend supply of food for some of our low income students.
- Tech Updates: Lawrence (2nd) and Roup (Preschool) will have new Promethean Boards installed in the coming weeks.
- School picture day will be Wednesday, August 24th.
- PLTW Parent Info Night has been set for Thursday, September 1st from 6-6:30pm in the cafeteria. Student-led “Showcase Nights” have been scheduled quarterly throughout the year.
- We were selected to receive the Monsanto grant to help fund "Little Jays in a STEM World"...a big thank you to our rural farmers and to Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Walker for their time and energy in writing the grant. The grant is $10,000.
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- On July 14-15 I attended a new SPED Director’s Academy in Jefferson City.
- On July 26, I completed 3 hours of training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention to be CPI certified. This was a refresher course from last year’s training. Mr. Walker, Mrs. Kemerling, and Mrs. Cox attended as well.
- Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Geib, Mrs. Vette, Mrs. Waigand, Mrs. Farley, and myself attended a PLTW Training Day on August 3. This was a follow up to the 4 day training they attended in Maryville through Northwest RPDC in July.

Welcome Letter (8/5/2016)
Rock Port Elementary Family and Community,
We are gearing up for a fantastic year here at Rock Port Elementary! My name is Mr. Waigand and it is with great pride and excitement that I write to you as the new Elementary Principal for the 2016-17 school year. I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself, introduce some other new members of our team, and give you a glimpse at some of the exciting plans for this year!
I am a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and have seven years of classroom teaching experience (third grade at Kearney R-I, Junior High Math at South Holt R-I). In 2012 I finished my masters in Elementary and Middle School Educational Leadership at Northwest Missouri State University. I have been the assistant principal at Minnie Cline Elementary in Savannah, MO the last four years before coming to Rock Port. My wife, Tabitha, is also an educator. She will be a first grade teacher at Rock Port this year in place of Mrs. Yocum. Mrs. Waigand is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University and has six years of teaching experience (first grade at South Holt R-1 and Savannah R-III). We live in Rock Port and are blessed to have two healthy and energetic boys - Kipton (3 years old) and Beau (1).
Also new to the Rock Port Elementary staff are Mrs. Kaitlea Hastert, Mrs. Wendy Hays, and Mr. Shaun Shineman. Mrs. Hastert will be replacing Mr. Parsons as our new sixth grade teacher. Mrs. Hastert is a graduate of Peru State College and has one year of teaching experience at Tarkio R-I School District as a fourth grade teacher. She and her husband, Ross, live in Rock Port. Mrs. Hays will be a familiar face to our students; she started as our school nurse last March. She has her RN degree from Clarkson College and has been a nurse for ten years. Mrs. Hays and her husband, Marshal, have two kids – Dayton (7) and Clara (4) and live in Nebraska City. Mr. Shineman has been the high school Physical Education/Health instructor the past six years; he will be our elementary P.E. teacher this year. Mr. Shineman is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University and lives in Rock Port. We welcome Mrs. Waigand, Mrs. Hastert, Mrs. Hays, and Mr. Shineman to our team and look forward to the talents they will bring to the building!
As a teacher and now principal I am very passionate about building positive relationships, making learning relevant to our students’ lives, and having some fun and laughter along the way. I am committed to working with our staff to continue to provide engaging, meaningful and rigorous work in our classrooms. I have had the opportunity to work with many of our teachers throughout the summer and in preparation for the upcoming school year. They truly want what is best for all students and are dedicated to giving your child many opportunities for quality learning experiences.
One of those new experiences is Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch! We are excited to be leading the way in Northwest Missouri through this innovative program that engages students’ natural curiosity through problem-based learning and technology. The program encourages students to be problem solvers, learn to take risks, and know that it is ok to make mistakes. I have seen the power this program can have on our students through some initial workshops this summer and I’m excited for our students to have this opportunity. We are planning some student-led “Showcase Nights” throughout the year for your child to share his or her projects and talk about their learning process along the way. More to come!
I look forward to a very positive and productive year together! I extend a special, yearlong invitation to you to join us at school activities and events whenever you can. Follow us on Twitter (@RPBlueJays) to stay current with the latest in school events and activities.
A few important dates upcoming…
We want, we need, and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education. If I can be of assistance please don’t hesitate to call or stop by the office. Together we can be “ALL IN” for your child.
Go Big Blue!
